7.3 Major assignment 1 [MA1]

By this stage in your MUA training, you should be getting familiar with the makeup application sequence and the contents of your supplied kit. You have also now had an opportunity to look at some natural (day) and full glam (night) makeup looks, and practice these on some friends and family. It is now time for your progress to be assessed and, most importantly, addressed with some tailored feedback, if required. To facilitate this, you will be required to complete and submit Major Assignment 1 [MA1].

Major Assignment 1 [MA1] requires you to:

Part 1: Natural makeup for a daytime event

You are to create a natural (day) makeup look for a female client attending a birthday lunch at a five-star waterfront restaurant. She has advised that she intends on wearing a white blazer and denim jeans, and would like a classy, fresh look that will last the entire day. You can draw inspiration from any of the three natural looks provided in the first lesson of this module, or create your very own natural makeup look suitable for the above event. However, this look must include the following components:

  1. Foundation: flawless, full coverage
  2. Concealer: conceal any obvious flaws
  3. Contour: you are required to use a cream contour for this look
  4. Blush: you are required to use a cream blush for this look
  5. Highlight: select whichever highlight you wish that will compliment your look
  6. Brows: natural, fluffy brows
  7. Eyes: a subtle, ombre eyeshadow look
  8. Lashes: use individual lashes for this look
  9. Lips: select whichever lip shade to compliment your look

Part 2: Full glam makeup for an evening function

You are to create a full glam (night) makeup look for a female client attending a gala dinner with a Moulin Rouge theme. She has advised that she intends on wearing a red gown. You can draw inspiration from any of the three full glam looks provided in the previous lesson of this module, or create your very own full glam makeup look suitable for the above event. However, this look must include the following components:

  1. Foundation: flawless, full coverage
  2. Concealer: conceal any obvious flaws
  3. Contour: you are required to use a powder contour for this look
  4. Blush: you are required to use a powder blush for this look
  5. Highlight: select whichever highlight you wish that will compliment your look
  6. Brows: bold, structured brows
  7. Eyes: an intense deep crease eyeshadow look
  8. Lashes: use strip lashes for this look
  9. Lips: select whichever lip shade to compliment your look

To ensure that we can provide you with tailored feedback, you will need to include a (photo of your) face chart for each look, as well as six (6) photos of your work. When capturing photos of your makeup work, try to position any lights in front of your model’s face and not behind. Ideally, take your photos outside during the day, however avoid direct sunlight on the face. If you must take your photos inside, avoid down lights above your model at all costs!

Examples of the images we require and the applicable angles are as follows (IMAGE 2-7 are to be taken once the makeup application has been completed):

IMAGE 1: A photo of your completed FACE CHART (available for download above)

IMAGE 2: Front on full face eyes open

IMAGE 3: Front on full face eyes down (not closed)

IMAGE 4: Left side of face eyes open

IMAGE 6: Right side of face eyes open
