There is no one answer to this question, and for a good reason. As you have learned throughout this module, there is a wide range of factors to consider when selecting the most suitable lash style and type for your client, and even the application technique you use can make all the difference. The lash goals of your client must also be considered! As a recap, when deciding on the perfect lash style and application technique, you need to consider:
Remember, when you select the lash length, it should be no more than 2mm-3mm longer than the natural lash following the 3mm rule. You will usually never exceed a total length of 14mm. When determining the diameter, you should always match the diameter to the clients natural lash. This may mean going slightly thicker for a dramatic look, with the average lash being 0.15mm and a maximum of 0.20mm.
Many of us want the longest, fullest and most luscious lashes, but this must never override client safety and the natural lash’s integrity. A good example is thinking about someone who has jet black hair and wants to go platinum blonde. Any experienced hairdresser will tell you that this cannot be achieved in one sitting – the risk of your hair falling out is just not worth it! In turn, hairdressers use their expertise to explain the full process required to achieve the desired look. Unfortunately, there is no magic wand that can achieve every client’s hair goals, which is true for your clients’ lash goals! If your client has weak and sparse natural lashes, it is unlikely you will be able to make her look like Kim Kardashian.
Effective consultation with your client is the most crucial part of determining which lash style will be the best for them in terms of the look they are trying to achieve, and the practicalities underpinning this decision. Using the knowledge you have learned in this module, you will now be more equipped to confidently explain why you recommend a particular lash curl, length, diameter and style. When determining the most appropriate lash style, at a minimum, you need to consider:
You must use your expertise and experience to help guide your client into selecting a realistic option. There are many ways that we can achieve gorgeous outcomes without compromising the safety of our client. Managing your clients’ expectations in the initial consultation will prevent any disappointment and will also ensure that you maintain your professional integrity. Going against what is realistic and practical to appease your client may hurt them and your reputation in the long run!
As you build your client base and use the full range of lash options, it is an excellent idea to take before and after photos as a point of reference for you, and to create a portfolio of examples for clients. As you have learned in this module, there are so many components to lash types and styles, and this can sometimes be difficult to explain to clients verbally. Having visual examples to reference, even including a comparison similar to the different outcomes demonstrated in the ‘classic lash style’ section of this module, can help you work with your client to determine and explain which lash style will be most suitable.
