6. Makeup application techniques

In terms of makeup application sequence, each makeup artist will have a different way they like to do things; some makeup artists like to complete the base fully before moving onto eyes, whereas others prefer to do eyes prior to foundation. There is no right or wrong here; it’s just finding what works best for you. Our expert recommends the following sequence:

For the purposes of your training, in this module, we follow this:

  1. Skin preparation
  2. Creating a flawless base
  3. Eyebrows
  4. Eyes
  5. Lips
  6. Finishing touches

As you practice your skills, you will determine which sequence works best for you. If you are ever doing a smoky eye or another makeup that is likely to have fallout, it can be useful to start with the eyes first. This way, you don’t destroy your base! There are also numerous makeup application techniques, and it would be impossible to cover them all in one course. As such, in addition to our expert tutorials, we have also included video tutorials from a range of professional makeup artists and online influencers so you can see different people in action. As you work through this module, take the time to watch all of the videos and access the supporting resources. If you come across a particular MUA you like, then subscribe to their channel and social media handles!

There is a lot to learn as an MUA, so we suggest that you take detailed notes throughout this module. In the skills hub, you will have an opportunity to apply the techniques you have learned in this module. As you learned in the previous module, it is important to note that all of the products you use during a makeup application must be decanted onto a palette. Sanitation and hygiene is a must to ensure that bacteria and other nasties are not spread from client to client.
