2. The industry

Beauty and personal care is a multi-billion dollar industry globally, and in Australia, the industry is expected to continue growing, reaching an expected 8.6 billion Australian dollars by 2025. The most exciting part of being a part of a growing industry is that it is continually evolving, and there are always new looks, products, tools, and techniques, which mean you will always be learning and improving.

In any industry, it is important to have a solid grasp of where the industry was (the history) and where the industry is heading (emerging trends) so that you can leverage this information to learn from past mistakes and to stay on top of exciting new trends which will impact the way you perform services. While some people find all the historical ‘stuff’ to be a bit boring, in this module, you will learn some really interesting facts about how the eyebrow has evolved over the years and some of the crazy methods our ancestors used to achieve the perfect look in their respective eras.

In modern times, evolutions still occur, and style, fashion and what we believe to be beautiful shifts with each trend. All you need to do is google ‘eyebrows through the ages’ to see the stark differences between what was considered to be on-trend in the ’20s, ’90s and now, and how our perspective on achieving the perfect brow has improved in modern times. While brow services are usually a subset skill of beauty therapists, brow artists can now specialise in their own right. In the past, brow maintenance used to be performed at home or in hair dressing salons, yet these days, there are brow bars specifically designed to meet every clients’ brow needs!  Just like hairdressers, fashion designers and makeup artists, as brow artists, we need to continually evolve and embrace the trends to best serve our clientele.

As such, in this module, we will first take a look at the evolution of eyebrows over the years. Next, we will look at industry trends that are changing the way we work and the sorts of looks we can achieve, including ways you can keep yourself up-to-date with changes in the industry. At the end of this module, we will finish with a brief look at the brow enhancement process end to end so that you know what to expect from the upcoming modules.
