In any industry, it is important to have a solid grasp of where the industry was (the history) and where the industry is heading (emerging trends) so that you can leverage this information to learn from past mistakes and to stay on top of exciting new trends which will impact the way you perform services. While some people find all the historical ‘stuff’ to be a bit boring, in this module, you will learn some really interesting facts about how nail enhancements have evolved over the years, and you will be surprised to learn that the acrylic nail we know today was originally invented by a dentist!
In modern times, evolutions still occur and style, fashion and what we believe to be beautiful shifts with each trend. All you need to do is google ‘nail styles through the ages’ to see the stark differences between what was considered to be on-trend in the ’20s, ’90s and now, and how our perspective on achieving the perfect nail has improved in modern times. While nail services used to be a subset skill of beauty therapists, nail technicians these days specialise in their own right. In the past, nail polish applications used to be performed at home or in hairdressing salons, yet these days, there are nail salons specifically designed to meet every client’s manicure and pedicure needs! Just like hairdressers, fashion designers and makeup artists, as nail technicians, we need to continually evolve and embrace the trends to best serve our clientele.
As such, in this module, we will first take a look at the evolution of nail enhancements over the years. Next, we will look at industry trends that are changing the way we work and the sorts of looks we can achieve, including ways you can keep yourself up-to-date with changes in the industry. At the end of this module, we will finish with a brief look at the nail enhancement process end to end so that you know what to expect from the upcoming modules.
